Hey everybody today I got a 1971 9.5 evinrude that seems to slip out of gear when running at high Rpms. Once in foward gear the prop will spin fine until I hit about half throttle and the prop stops spinning but the lever is still engaged into foward same for reverse. Once I return to idle it starts spinning again. The interesting thing is that when I first start it up and put it into foward it runs fine. I can put it into neutral than back into foward and no issues unti I shift it into reverse and then once I put it back into foward gear this issues starts to occur. This engine had this issue before so I rebuilt the lower unit gears. Installed a new foward and reverse and clutch dog. Gear oil was fine once I drained it to make sure there were no leaks.

Any suggestions
Sounds like a spun prop hub
Put a dab of paint on the prop in line with the head of the prop nut retaining pin.

Go for a quick trip and power up until it slips. Then examine the position of the paint mark in relation to the cotter pin If they no longer line up then it proves it's a spun prop hub

not sure that hub is the type that would slip, but try the test anyway.

That is the hub. And yes your story suggests it is slipping. Picture shows what is inside there (35hp picture, but same feature)Prop Cutaway.jpg

Well I just through on a prop from another 9.5 I found laying around and a new pin and it ran great no slipping at all in both gears. Seems like this should have done it thanks guys
