I cannot see how taking the outer cover off is going to help you one bit. If the driveshaft is stuck, you can't reach it from there. If it is not, you would be better off to try the shift rod coupler again with a flat screwdriver or a quarter inch drive socket.

Either screw on the coupler will release the shift rod, you just have to take the screw out completely.

Ezeke is totally right.

Removing the side cover won't help one iota with the lower unit removal. Everything interesting is inside that _inner_ exhaust housing.

It may be time to shoot some penetrating oil in at the drive shaft and let it soak upside down for a couple of days. You may have a rusted drive shaft.

Um.....the cover is on. You guys told me to "button 'er back up", so I did.

I can't get a socket in there. period. It won't go down further to get a socket in there. I can still move the shift lever and manipulate the gears (although the range suffers with the gearcase lowered any)

I can't use a screwdriver because I can't get a square angle into the screwhead for the driver, and it's starting to strip, thus I want to use a socket, or at least drop it down to get better purchase on the screw.

AND even if I do unscrew the shiftrod, there is still *something* holding it in there. Otherwise I'd be able to pull the gearcase down further, and the shift lever would go into the 'reverse' position. This is why I included a pic of where the gear lever is when it's down as far as it'll go.

If it is suffering from a stuck drive shaft, how does one go about remedying this?

All this just to change out the f$#%^& water pump/impeller. I do NOT envy mechanics for their job. But I do envy their abilities.

Sorry iWombat, I missed your fix.

Ezeke is totally right.

Where should I shoot the oil, and should I just put the whole motor upside down? Let me know if you need any specific photos.

Thanks!

Turn the whole thing upside down and squirt into the crack between the lu and the housing. Try and land it on the drive shaft, or even just coat the heck out of the waterpump housing. It'll find its way down onto the drive shaft and work its way in from there.

Unless someone has a better idea . . .

If they are stuck, the way that I have found will sometimes work is to get the driveshaft at a slight angle and turn the flywheel. Repeating this at various angles may free it. Downward force on the gearcase will just pull the impeller key through the water pump and ruin the waterpump.

I've released a 115HP by loosening the bolts just enough that I could move the gearcase a little while running the engine in my landscape barrel. Pushing the gearcase from side to side and front to back will help to loosen the rust.

Thanks ezeke.
