I have the Evinrude version of the 1971 60hp, I just replaced the rectifier due to it shorting out. Now the diagram I have shows that metal box with the 4 wires, yello yellow grey, black purple as the clipper circuit assembly, when replacing the rectifier i noticed to clipper had a black hole in it, burnt out like hole, so I took it to an Evinrude Diamond in the Rough dealer who has all the parts needed, he said I don't need to replace the clipper circuit, that if i just move the red wire from the rectifier from position 7 on the block to position 9 all will be good to go......can I trust him.......tell me more please my email is td22ma@aol.com any and all info on these devil of a motor would be great Tommy

ps my original problem was I kept frying solenoids, almost instantly, boat was new to me, and would not shift, found a used lower unit replaced shifted fine for 3 days, but i never really ran it in neutral for long periods of time, set it up this spring started it up, left it in neatral and warmed it up for about 15 minutes and it popped in gear, ohm reading on green solenoid now was .2 ohms, replaced the solenoid and the exact same thing happened, tested the volatage going to the solenoids at the switch, had 18 volts and up.....checked the rectifier it was bad....have yet to replace the solenoids, I just pulled off the lower unit...what do you think rectifire gonna fix my problem? or is something else overchargin the system and will fry the rectifier and solenopids again? :D  :p

Tommy.... Where are you getting eighteen (18) volts from? If you're running one battery, it must not be a 12 volt battery. If you're using a dual battery setup, you've got them hooked up in series, not in parallel.

Having batteries hooked in series adds the voltage from one battery to the other! The voltage problem IS the problem! Correct that before installing any more electronic components.

Only 1 battery, the engine was running while i was moving along the water, took a volt test at the shift selector, the lead that comes in to then feed the solenoids.....volts read 18.....too much coming from the charging system.,...any idea why.......I have blown 2 neutral solenoids......both with in about 15 minutes of idle in netural

I'm not sure how you're getting the charge voltage all the way to 18v with this low amp system either, but I would be checking your grounds. This simple system is used on all kinds of small engines from lawnmowers to ultra light aircraft and snowmobiles. Usually the rectifier must be very well grounded to sort of bleed off the excess voltage through the case.
There are several ground straps, and wires on this motor. Make sure they are all hooked up, and not green or cruddy.
If this doesn't help, have a shop test your battery. Could have problem, but have never seen the one you describe

Dogger....here is a little more info...the rectifier lead wire had lost its rubber coating and was actually grounding to the casing of the clipper circuit assembly..now i have replaced the rectifier but noticed a burn hole in the clipper circuit...the clipper circuit I was told does no have to be replaced and can be removed but I do need to move the power wire on the rectifier...any ideas......

tommy..lost and posted this qquestion 3 times and i am still lost
