I started by cheking the coils to make sure they were getting juice and they were not so now I am not sure what to check. Do I need to check the magnetos, and if I do how do I check them to see if they are working. Do I need to pull the flywheel? Or can I just run a hot wire to the coil packs to make them live all the time. Just not sure what to do next

Re: 1971 Evinrude no spark

Sorry, it is a 50 hp 2stroke, also a 2 cylinder model 50173s. I think it has been setting around for about 7 years and I have cleaned the carbs, the bottom end is off at the moment because the solenoid is not working properly to take it out of gear. It would be nice if I could change it over to a manual shift, I think that would be more dependable. I hope this is all the info you needed.

ok so you have an electric shift. it will nopt come out of gear until you start the engine. they were built to default to forward, as a safety measure incase the soleniod went out, that way you could get to the dock. you have a power pack, which were noted for going bad the controlled the power to the coils. go to brp-evinrude, click parts and access. then click engine diagram, then follow the direction. it has the complete diagram of your engine. there are procedures to check the power pack, but the search function is not working at the present time. i had a 73 50 that the power pack went bad, you can get a manual at kencooke.com or get the number and go to ebay. the original mfg manual is better, then the seloc manual. my manual only goes back to 73.

So Sage you are saying that I can make it a manual, that is good. One thing about the lower unit is that I think there is something wrong with it because it makes about a 3rd of a turn and it stops. Have put a lot of pressure on it and it still will not turn. So I may need a different one unless you all think I can rebuild it myself. Give me a scale of 1- to 10 and say how hard you belive it is.

imho electirc shift not worth rebuilding. if they were they would still be making them. the #1 outboard house here won't even work on an engine that is electric shift .

Yeah the foot is off the motor, and I pulled the solenoid and the hook on the bottom is gone. I am thinking that if I wish to keep this motor that I should start looking for a used manual foot for it. Now do you happen to know what years will work for this 1971? I mean it would be nice if it had a broad range all the way into the 80's. I think you said you changed it with a 74 foot right?
