1971 Glastron v-142 Underside of Hull Damage...

Hello everyone!

My husband and I just bought our first boat and it happens to be a 1971 Glastron v-142 with a 40HP 1968 Evinrude outboard. Firstly, neither of us really know anything about boats so we were just sold on the way she looked (not the best way to make an investment)!



Now that she is home in our driveway we have noticed some damage on the underside of the hull. We are both pretty handy, but this may be beyond what we can do. It looks like she has 3 areas that have been siliconed/patched along with some rub from the trailer. What would your advice be to fix these issues?

Welcome! Nice looking boat. But I'm biased, since I own a 1970 Glastron V-142 Skiflite.

Those repairs look pretty bad. The way they globbed the stuff on. I would remove the sealant and see what type of holes/damage they are covering. There are a bunch of people on here that can give you advice on repairing the damage.

I agree with you that the trailer bunks appear to the source of the damage. IMHO the bunks do look long enough to properly support the transom. While it may be possible to move the boat forward on the trailer with the existing bunks, that may also make the trailer tongue weight excessive (max = 7-10%). All these issues can be examined after you remove the boat from the trailer to make repairs to the hull. My first boat was a 1970 Glastron V-153 which is identical to yours just longer but you are many miles ahead of where I started and still manged to enjoy it for over ten years. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. Yeah we are going to have to peal that silicone off and see what we are working with. It would be nice to know if the trailer itself is doing the damage. Here is a better picture of the trailer. So you think I could move it closer to the front to avoid damaging in again?

Pretty sure damage is not from the trailer. Get the Junk off and take more pics. We'll be able to give more advice when we can see the actual damage.

My reason for suggesting you move the boat forward is to get better support under the transom where the weight of the motor is concentrated. The damage may have occured during launch, recovery or somewhere else and not be related to the bunks. Bunks are a likely suspect in my opinion given the location of the damage. Need to see a full-width, side-view of the trailer that includes the coupler to determine if there is adequate room to slide the boat forward. As mentioned previously, moving the boat forward on the trailer may place too much weight on your trailer hitch. Some trailers (mine) have adjustment capability with the axle/spring assembly to offset the excessive tongue weight. Can't tell from the picture in Post#1 if that is the case with yours. Look at it closely and determine if everything is welded in place or bolted. Good luck!

It looks like there is enough room to move it forward but I don't think it needs to be three feet. Just enough to get the transom slightly forward of the end of the bunks. I hope your axle can be moved forward also because it is very close to the rear end of the trailer.

Ok we moved the winch part up about 14" and that seemed to do the trick! As for the damage I scraped away some of the silicone and there seems to be some hardened epoxy like substance under it. I've attached picture. Any thoughts?

There is more weight there, but I don't think it is too heavy. Before I could lift it with one finger and now it takes two hands!

I really can't tell. The stuff that's on there is really hard so I would have to pry it out. That said we did take her on the water before removing the silicone patches and she didn't take in any water so whatever the PO did worked, it's just not pretty nor right. I'm guessing we would have to grind out all the areas?

Your tongue weight should be around 150#. Bathroom scales will tell you that. Use a R/O sander with 40 grit paper and sand that damage back about 3" all the way round'. Feather it towards the center to dish it out. Wash it down well with acetone then do a layup of glass and resin like this... If the sanding does cause the repair to go thru the hull let me know and I'll tell you how to fix it from the outside.

Shouldn't be a problem. I can explain it to you when the time comes on how to prepare the patch so it goes on in on fell swoop!!!!

You can paint or Gelcoat it. It's up to you!
