I just purchased a 1971 50hp johnson hydro-static shift. I tore the lower unit down replaced the water pump housing impeller, and metal plate. I also changed the fluid in the lower unit, and replaced the spark plugs. I attempted to start the engine but it will run for about 15 seconds before shutting off. I took out the float needle valve, and cleaned out the carb with carb cleaner. The carbs seem pretty clean. I can keep the motor running by periodically pressing the choke switch. Can anyone give me some insight on this issue please. I'm desperate.

carb needs to be disassembled and soaked. There are a few little passages in there that a spraying of carb cleaner won't get to. Often they have to be cleaned out with a small strand of wire.
