1971 johnson 50 starter spring

Possible silly questions:

1.I have had the top nut on my starter fly off and lost the spring, have tried others from Ace hdwe but they are too weak.Anybody have luck with a replacement?

2.There is a top piece that contains the spring on the top below the nut. I have a couple of these should I put one on the bottom of the spring also or will the correct spring take care of this?

Those spring are readily available #317451 on this site. You can also shop eBay. Anything at a hardware store is going to be a guess as to strength. That nut is a crush nut so it doesn't come off easily.
