So, I have a 1971 60esl-71c I have been working on and I can’t seem to get spark is there a certain orientation of the distributer cap or something also it has timing marks on the flywheel but the flywheel itself and the rotor button are botched into the crank do I have to set the timing ?

The flywheel key on these does not change timing as in the 1973 and newer motors.----Yes the rotor is notched.----Flywheel does have timing marks for you to check so key must not be sheared.-----That black rubber bumper is the stop for MAXIMUM timing advance.----That is the only timing you need to worry about.---Idle timing looks after itself.

That’s what I thought just seems weird If I turn the key on and move the timing plate toward the back of the motor and I have the spark tester on cylinder two it sparks bright blue it’s like when I do that it opens the points but doesn’t seem to make sense why it doesn’t spark when cranking

What have you done on this motor ??---Need to know.----Are points set at 0.010" ?----Did you clean rotor and cap ?-----Anti-reversing spring in place?------Is your battery the right capacity and load tested ?-----Is your electric starter in good condition and not drawing too much power ?----All simple things to check.

Points are to spec, reverse spring is great and I am at 9.8 volts while cranking so I assume the starter is not drawing to much power battery is a good battery and I scuffed inside of cap and rotor with scotch bright

It should start no problem then.----Put manual choke on.-----Then wrap a rope around the flywheel.--Turn key on.-----Give it a good pull.---Should bark and roar for you.

Do you know anywhere I could get a manual for this thing ?

9.8 volts????? Where did you measure that? Well whatever the answer, that doesn't sound right to me. Sounds like a dead cell in the battery. Did you have it load tested? I believe it is sparking when you hand trigger it, but the low voltage when cranking is insufficient to power the amplifier.

To answer your other question, reprints of the factory service manual are available. Google Ken Cook Co. But i should tell you, the manual is obsolete when it comes to the ignition system, telling you to use obsolete test equipment. However, it is of value for telling how the system works.

Well---I too suggested load testing the battery ---but owner assumes battery is a good one.

Try jumping from your truck -- truck engine on, like you were jumping a vehicle (OK, a land-based vehicle). Pos. goes to the post on the starter. Neg goes to the starter bracket. See if it spins faster than before (don't go through the solenoid, and don't let the sparks scare you off -- but do get the polarity right).

Might consider this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Johns...879945?hash=item5499efc309:g:rpUAAOSwzFRgd2Pi
