Hello everyone. I bought a boat last week that is in very good condition. It hasn't been run in four years and before it was put into storage it was professionally winterized and stored indoors. I mixed some new gas in it as well as new spark plugs and started it up, it ran perfectly for about 30 seconds and then the plugs got fouled and it started to run rough and backfire. Also, It will run fine when the idle rpm is up but as soon as it is brought to neutral before engaging the forward gear it sputters and dies out...any ideas what could be wrong?

Basics. Compression, spark, fuel.

Any one of the above can be causing your problems. Make sure you are getting good spark when the motor warms up. Thermal expansion a cracked coil could cause the spark to die or become intermittent.

Make sure that you are getting good compression, that would eliminate a host of possibilities.

After running for 30 seconds, can you keep it running by pumping the priming bulb? Look to the fuel pump. Can you keep it running by choking? Look to the carburetor. I would probably remove and inspect the carburetors in any case. You also probably want to verify timing.

Look to the "Awakening a sleeping outboard" in the "top secret files" thread.
