Re: 1971 Johnson 9.5 HP Problems

I decided not to dip the carb, not yet anyway. I am going to go ahead and get a carb rebuild kit and do that work. I also replaced the plugs with the correct #J4J. set at .030. as per instructions. I think that I will also replace the empellar while I am at it, since the motor would not go into rev. and I will be in the lower anyway. I am aking around about the dipping as a pre-rebuild action, any thoughts on this. neccessary/ not neccessary, Okay/not Okay. I did see in the sticky file under the discussion about ethanol damage, that a fella used the dip, but was certain to scald the parts before use. I wonder if that is what Bob VT meant buy not running it through the motor? I am glad for the info on setting/adjusting the carb. Anyway, just waiting now for the parts so I can get started. Very anxious to see what this little motor runs like when in good upkeep. Jim.ussneverfloat71

Re: 1971 Johnson 9.5 HP Problems

I finally got enough time off to dedicate a little attention to my 9.5 johnson.
I almost immediately found that some of my problem is in the shorting switch,
as soon as my wife figures out how to upload pics from our digital camera I will show you all what I mean. I knew that the wires had been taped, but had no idea that they were actually burned/corroded and frayed to the point of making some contact all the time. I disassembled the fuel pump and found the cap to pump gasget to be worn out, so I am ordering both parts today.
When I find more I will let you all know.

Re: 1971 Johnson 9.5 HP Problems

I finally got enough time to do some work on my motor and it runs out very well.
There is one or two things more that need attention.
1. When we got it on the lake to test, it seems to run better with the lid off. I suppose this is as a result of the exaust boot being old and worn out. Any ideas?
2.There is a part in the power head housing that is broken, It appears to be the connector between the forward/reverse handle and the linkage. I will find the part # and order it. I believe this is why it will only go into forward and not reverse.
What we have done so far:
Dipped the carb, rebuilt the carb, replaced the shorting switch. replaced the auto plugs with marine plugs. greased all fittings. And also a few more things.
