Just bought a 15 foot sailboat that has a sears 7 HP motor, Model 217.59480. Although Sears still has some of the parts at www.sears.com, they don't have some of the parts to rebuild the carburetor. Any suggestions or should I replace it with either a newer rebuilt or new. Which motor is most dependable in this size range as a backup when the wind doesn't blow?

i have found that the sears.com site is a little uninformative in that the picture numbers don't sometimes go with the parts number list. if it is any help, look in your local yellow pages for a sears service center, not the auto center, and go there with your mod #'s. also try a older lawn mower shop because your motor is actualy a te***sah motor and the carb is a tilletson carb.

Howdy, Robert. Pinkmouse is right about the Te***seh (Power Products) engine powerhead and the Tillotson carb. Sears used variations of these engines in lawnmowers and chainsaws, as well as outboards and other products. Watch out for variations: these engines are rated everywhere from 2 to 8hp, depending on type and size of carb, compression ratio, type of magneto, port timing, aluminum vs. steel rods, sleeve vs. needle and ball bearings, etc. Your engine is probably most like the one used in 8G chainsaws, except that the chainsaw used a diaphram carb and fixed timing.

Good luck.
JB

I contacted CPC, Certified Parts Corporation at 800-356-0777 and they have the parts I looking for. They are sending them out priority mail and the prices are very reasonable. Also they were very informative. They bought the rights from ESKA, the original manufacture of the SEARS outboard engines and have many of the old replacement parts. Thanks Chicago for your assistance.

------------------
