I have a chance to purchase this unit totally, completely rebuilt for $320. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with these models
(model # 217.59440)and if they are reliable and if they have any unusual "quirks", like being extra noisy or rough low-speed idle even tuned.
thanxs,
Harry

Howdy, Hfeld.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Noisy, vibrate, need chainsaw oil at 16:1 or 24:1. Don't idle well.

For that kind of money you should be able to find a nice used 5 to 8hp water cooled twin that would make you a lot happier.

Good luck. :)

Unless I'm mistaken, that one will be based off a Johnson TD/TN series 5hp engine. 24:1 mix and extremely reliable, but parts are now hard to get including essentials like the carb kit and ignition components. No gearshift either. (Presuming TD here)
I'm not much good a prices though since they're very different here.

Hi, Hfeld.

If you can confirm that it is an OMC-built engine I would recommend it over the Eska-built engine.

You would need a Service manual for the Johnson twin for it, and perseverance in finding some parts, but you would still have a better engine.

Good luck. :)
