Dave there's tons of info in numerous threads here in the SC forum on transom repairs. :)

If you get stuck on something in particular we'll be around. ;)

I used a 4" Stainless Steel cup brush on a variable speed grinder I got from Harbor Freight to remove the corrosion.. That let me control the speed and not remove to much metal..
A lot of people use the nylox brush in the orange color.. It does a good job also..

I am just finishing up the very same thing. Check out the last couple of pages of my project, and a few before that, when I got the same surprise you just did. Your pictures could have been my boat. Link is at the bottom. You should look around at other fixes too, as WM suggests, depending on how bad the corrosion is. Mine was pretty bad.

Id get ready to learn solid rivets and remove that z brace and knee brace to get a real good cleaning up there. Its doable!

I picked up 3/4" marine plywood for the transom and aluminum sheet for the floor. Removed some hardware from the boat and decals. Boat went from being over a thousand pounds to about 600 since I got it. I sold the motor that was on the boat and now down to bare aluminum.
