Re: 1971johnson 100hp cooling system help

Welcome to iboats mdelaney!

We need a little more than what you gave on info. Is the engine overheating? When was the last time the impeller/t-stats where changed out? Or is it some kind of different problem with the cooling system?

Any info on the above will help....thanks!

Re: 1971johnson 100hp cooling system help

it keeps overheating when it gets into the water

sry but i dont have the manual.

the engine runs and will sit in the grass running but when you get it into the st. johns river
(im in jax fl) it runs for 30 seconds then overheats

we have run water through the engine but it doesn't circulate

there is a little waterbox on the backside of the engine that the water runs through that has 2 springs in it, we just spent $500 to have this guy fix the problem we went back to him a few weeks later and he said he ran it for hours but when we went out it lasted 30 seconds then the always dreaded overheating alarm started going off

so i think that when he was "fixing" the motor he might have put the 2 springs in backwards there is a thick one and a thin one, each one with a little stopper that fits onto the top of the spring

there are 2 pipes that water runs through to cool the engine water runs through when directly inserted but when puting water through the water box it doesnt go anywhere it is as if the water is able to exit but not enter

hope you can reply soon,
Mike

The waterbox as you call it is the housing for the thermostats (the springy things). They are not supposed to open until the engine gets to operating temp.

OBJ asked about the waterpump?????
