Just got a new boat and it has a 100 hp.V4 2 cylinder model#100esl72r I'm wondering is this motor a good one or one with many flaws. And what steps should I take to before I try to fire it over.A little history, the boat has been parked since 1996 and not ran at all. The previous owner was an older lady and used boat for Grand children only. Siad she beleives that the "power pack may be bad".Any help?

I have a 71 it has been a good motor for me. The two biggest down falls i have found is that the points are expensive and the power pack is a couple hundred bucks if it goes bad. One thing to watch is to make sure you have a good battery running the boat. If for some reason the battery voltage drops below 12 volts it could fry your power pack. If your power pack is bad you will not have any spark to any of the cylinders. I just had to replace my power pack last year due to running engine with a bad set of points in it. I would definately find a manual for your motor also it has some good information in them mine has helped me alot. If the motor has sat i would definately put some sort of oil in the cyl and let it soak and try turning over by hand first. Also the biggest issue with a motor that has sat that long is it needs to have water impellar changed asap. They are neoprene and they won't pump correctly or may possibly break if you run motor to much after it has sat for a long period of time.

I ran this very engine for many years and had really great luck with it. This particular engine is a smaller displacment than the 115/125 engines, so some internals will not interchange. It does have an electric shift lower unit which can be prroblematic and hard to find parts for. Your engine does not have points-a good thing. Put an inductive timing light on each plug wire when you turn the engine over to check for spark. That should tell you something about the power pack-an expensive item on this model. If the carbs were not drained prior to storage, then may have dried fuel in them, which may affect idling and high speed operration. You will quickly find out when you try to start it. I'd make sure you discard any old fuel in the tank and check for any residual water prior to adding new premixed fuel.

Boater, you need to start your own thread, instead of adding to this one. FYI, that engine defaults to forward gear if there is a problem with the electric shift signal to the lower unit. That's so you can get home, (forward gear) if you ever have an electrical shift problem. Could be a problem with the shift switch in the control box, or the shift solenoid in the lower unit.
