So, today I go to put my lower unit back on after installing a water pump kit, and the drive shaft won't go up into the hole all the way. I first didn't know where the hold up was, until I looked up into the motor with a flash light. there seems to be a round ring piece blocking the drive shaft hole to crank shaft.
Question: is this some sort of exhaust extension tube bushing that has popped out and is now plugging the hole, or ? I looked on another site at a microfiche, and it doesn't show any sort of bushing for this motor. any ideas?

Turn the flywheel to get the splines to line up and it should go up when it mates. The ring you refer to is the carrier with a seal to keep water out of the splins and corroding the splines. Be carefuyl not to jar this loose as I,ve heard done on this site.

thank you for the reply. I did get that ring seated again, and it seemed solid. once I did that,. it fell together. I just want to get this motor together so I can run it a little and do some fishing before the snow fly's. I'm guessing I should tear the power head off this winter and make for certain the seal is in place. I've heard too many horror stories on this site where people can't get the drive shafts pulled out of the power head. I sure don't want to go through that with this monster motor. this is a great site...keep up the good work!

The seals are likely in place, as they ride on the crankshaft. If they are missing, you will get water into cylinder 6 and the spark plug will be steamcleaned and look like brand new. So run the beast and then check the sparkplugs to see that the color is the same.

I will test run it tomorrow. hopefully I don't run into any new found issue. it's was running sweet after I cleaned the carburetors, rebuilt the rusted tight starter, rebuilt the corroded-solid distributor, repaired the mice-chewed wiring harness, and 2 spark plug wires. Now, with the new impeller kit, this motor should go another 40 years. I will update!!

People have trouble pulling driveshafts out of crankshafts because someone didn't bother to grease the splines every year or ever.
