Not been on iboats for ages and i have not been near my boat either. Was away stayin in a lovely log cabin on the bonny banks of Loch Lomond(favorite place in the world) where i proposed to my girlfriend to which she accepted. Ahhhhh Happy days.

Anyway it was well hard because I had this box of goodies at home taunting me to fit them to my engine.

The list is as follows-

"Full" engine gasket set
Timing Belt
2 x Fuel pump rebuild kits
3 x Carb rebuild kits inc floats needles and filters
6 x New plug leads with distributer screw fitting
1 x new coil lead
6 x new perma gap plugs
1 x new impeller kit and housing
1 litre of gear oil
1 x water pressure gauge

The last time I was on iboats this is where i left off- http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=014046#000000

Anyway there was water leaking from around the plug holes and from the bottom of the exhaust manifold cover and the pee stream was definately not up to scratch.

Im am unsure if this engine has ever seen salt water but i suspect that it may have, this being the case I am very worried about removing any of the bolts from the powerhead. I intend to remove the head and work on it on a bench. Should I heat the bolts and give them a "little" tap with the hammer before attempting to remove them.

Good to be back, any input greatly appreciated.

Stan............

stan, that motor is in NO need of rebuild. im ashamed at you, how DARE you talk that way of an inline !!!

by the way, i sold mine and bought an inline(3 cyl) mariner.

anyways....try the bolts with penatrating iol and then some heat after that has soaked in for a day or two. just keep squirting the oil. oil is good!!!

my inline saw salt its hole life and i didnt break ANY bolts, and i took off all kinds of panels and stuff, way more than you're proposing to do..

when you get that power head off, replace the water jacket gaskets and the cyl cover gaskets and the retorque to spec.

that motor is brute!! only reason i sold mine was i couldnt afford to feed her anymore, bvery thirsty.

after all those parts you listed above are refitted, give it a good decarb and youll think she's new all over again.

let us know whats happening....

mike

Good to see that you are still on the board mike, 3 cyl mariner..hmmm still a merc eh. Isn't that engine just like a chopped down version of the IL6? Do you find much difference in the fuel consumption?

We are seasonal boaters here in Scotland, we have little choice as the winters are hard, wet and windy. Only using in the Summer months saves the anual cost considerably thou if I remember correctly you were getting like 2 mpg on a good day with your IL6, i recon you had it propped wrong :eek:p

Ok i'll pull the powerhead off and apply some WD40 every 2 hours or so for say a couple of days before removing the water covers. In the mean time i'll set about rebuilding the carbs to keep me busy while I wait for the oil to do its thing.

Is there anything I should do before removing the head and do I need to know anything about the carb rebuild?

Was over at the boat today and trying to loosen off bolts. I have managed to loosen the bolts securing the powerhead to the lower unit. I am also very fortunate that the nuts on the water jacket have bolts at the back of them. I attempted to loosen them but soon decided after breaking 2 that it would be easier just to drill through and replace with a new nut and bolt.(Clams mentioned this in post http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=014609 )

My next problem is the exhaust manifold cover plate, i have so far managed to remove 1 bolt successfully and have broken 2 others and I wasn't even applying much pressure! I can see myself drilling and tapping here  ( As always i'll stick at it and if i need to make new threads its not the end of the world.

Stan...........

Try heating the block and then going after the plate bolts one at a time where you heatead. Try an impact driver with a socket attached too.

If you still break them, once you remove the covers there will probably be enough of the bolt sticking up to weld a 5/16 - 18 nut on the stub. (after a day of penetrating oil soaking around the broken studs) THEN heat the block all around that bolt and whack the nut *gently* side to side with a hammer - then try to unscrew the remaining stud with a wrench, don't use an impact driver here... thats now a mating surface under you. If you have an air type impact gun - all the better though - just set it real light and turn it up as needed.

I've had GREAT luck with the nut welded to the stud trick, any welding guy can do them all in 5 minutes or less - you've already set them all up.

If all this fails it's time to use the trusty 5/16 - 18 helicoil kit.

-W

PS: Don't try to remove that innermost plate that's UNDER the two plates you're working on. Unless you were getting water in the cylinders, there's no reason to pull it - and it's REAL nasty.

Thanks for the help Clams, I have neither an impact driver or a welding kit. I im also pretty sure that there isn't much stud sticking out to weld anything onto.

I was going to just start drilling using small bits and working out to larger bits until i only had the shell of the old bolt left then i could maybe chip it away. Thats what ive done when working on cars in the past.

What exactly is a helicoil kit? I have heard of tap and dye but never helicoil.

tkx

Stan............

I took the covers off of the opposing side to the exhaust manifold cover plate(fuel pump side) and the bolts came off easy as pie, no sweat at all. I was astounded when i could see my pistons! The were gleaming and had textured sides like they had just left the factory! I suspect that my engine has either been well looked after or it has had a recent rebuild. Strange thing is, when i bought the boat with engine, it wasn't running and hadn't been for well over a year turned out the switch box was faulty. I think I might have a good un!

Stan............

Go to a NAPA and ask to see a 5/16 - 18 helicoil kit. it allows you to tap out the hole oversize and then screw in a stainless steel thread coil back to the correct size.

Also - usually there is enough stud sticking up on the exhaust side to weld a nut onto - it's VERY much worth the drive to a welder and a little money to avoid 10's of hours fixing the holes.

-W

Im going to do like you said Clams and have a welder look at it, I sincerely hope your right and I get the bolts out. You mention sizes clams, like 5/16 - 18 if I go to a hardware store here in Scotland,(Ive never heard of NAPA)will they know what I mean because this means nothing to me im afraid. For instance you say to use a 1/4-20 nut and bolt as a replacement on the plug side water jacket is this an imperial or metric size, ive only ever heard of like m10, m8 etc.

Im going to remove the powerhead tomorrow with a couple of guys for lifting. My boat is kept outside on a trailer and I have no access to a lifting block. Will I have a problem removing the head and is there anything I should do beforehand?

Stan...........

Those are Imperial measurements - you may have to take a drive to England to get them. :D

1/4 - 20 is a 1/4 inch bolt - at 20 threads per inch.

-W

I removed mine recently (mid 70s 1500) and it will come off fairly easy once the 8 mounting nuts are removed and the powerhead is rocked back and forth from side to side and front to back to break the seal so to speak. It has to come off with the shift guide block still attached to the powerhead so be careful not to break the plastic throttle/shift cable clip while removing. It's very manageable with at least one helper. It also helps to raise the trailer jack to lower the engine center of gravity.

2cycle what exactly is the "shift guide block"? Should I not remove the control cables before removing the head?(Am I being daft?)

Thanks

Stan

stant1man,

The shift guide block is the "rail" or "guide" that the shift cable travels backwards and forward on while the motor is shifted. It attaches to the powerhead on the lower distributor side of the motor. It is attached by three bolts: the bottom one cannot be removed without the powerhead being removed. Just be careful with it when lifting the engine off and you should be fine..

Re: 1972 1150 IL6 leaking and in need of rebuild :)

Also, another bit of advice from a local mechanic helped me out when putting the powerhead back on: The base gasket will/can easily break or be damaged if you do not start out with it applied to the powerhead instead of the exhaust housing. He told me to hold it in place with a lttle bit of needle bearing grease that will press out once the motor is bolted down. It's easy to damage the gasket (as I did) if you start out with it on the base and then try to align the holes that way. I learned the hard way. Also, you will probably have to gently tilt the powerhead back once it's on to get the front two nuts started as they have little clearance.

I also have a Glastron...A 1973 18 ft. tri-hull with 74 Merc 1500. Have you seen the "classic glastron" site on the internet? Got to love the classics and the inlines...

Hi Stan,

Sounds like you're going well. Congrats on the engagement. Another trick I use is to hit the heads of the bolts (using a drift and 'lump' hammer) to 'jar' the threads. It will work on some bolts and may save you having to re-thread some holes.

Chris.........

Actually I love the new "cushy" stuff with the inlines retrofitted. I like my cupholders, intigral cooler, and electrical nicities.
I see you're in Greenville - that makes us neighbors (Fair Play). Let me know if you ever take that puppy down to Hartwell for a blast.

-W
