OK I have a '72 18hp. Model #18202RC.
After reading many threads on this motor I realized that the top seal (under stator plate) was defiantly leaking.
I did manage to remove it without splitting the crank case. I have removed the motor from the exhaust housing and giving everything a good cleaning.
Now it would make sense to replace the bottom seal while everything is apart. Right? the problem is the little info I have found tells me that its not a standard seal. It is a carbon seal. On the BRP parts site it shows how it goes together.
should I be replacing the 2 o rings also? Or can you even get to them? I don't even know if its leaking. If its not a hard job I will just replace it.
Just looking for some advise from someone who knows this type of seal.

Thanks

real simple...unless the carbon seal is broken or cracked it and the "seal" just slide off the crankshaft as one piece. The seal is more like a thick oring that fits inside the carbon seal. Pop the old one out and the new one in. A little grease on the inner part of the seal and slide it back on. You can see that the spring and it's retainers are held on by a snap ring. Get it off, and everything just slide off. Order a new powerhead to exhaust housing gasket when you get the orings and you'll be in business.

Your right. I made sure I could order all the parts first. Everything came apart fairly easy. But on any parts drawing and in the Manual it shows 2 o rings. When I took mine apart there only seems to be one inside the carbon seal. Should there be another one inbetween the barring and the carbon seal? If so mine was missing.

I think that oring is supposed to be on the inside of crankcase, but I cannot say that definitively. Time to ask the experts.

I think your right (again) lol. I did a google search on carbon seals. The carbon is the seal it self. No oring needed.
I guess I spent an extra $1.25 on a oring I didn't need.
Thanks for your help.
