Hey guys, just fixed a 1972 2hp Johnson for a kicker and for the fun.

Problem: Can not maintain idle or running if I am not pulling the choke in or out or have the choke half way out. I tried adjusting the slow idle need but no go.

-the valve from the tank is wide open
-the screw cap on the tank is open (even took the cap off)

Information:
- clean the carburetor and installed a new kit ( the float is level)
- cleaned the tank and filter and fuel tap valve
- new fuel hose
- new impeller (water is coming out find and head temps no greater than 134 degrees
- new spark plug Champion J6c gapped at 0.30
- new points gapped at 0.20
- new condensor
- new coil and flushed with mounting boss
- great blue spark with tester at 1/4 inch. ( spark is strong enough to ignite a fart 3feet away)
- compression reading at 95lb with 3 pulls of the cord (single cylinder)
- new gear oil in the foot.
- gas mixed fresh 50:1
-slow idle needle is out at 1 1/2 counter clockwise (factory manual recommendation and needle is in good shape)
- fast idle needle is out 1/2 counter clockwise (factory manual recommendation and needle is in good shape)

I was going to do 2 things but wanted to check with you gentlemen to see if there is something else I am missing?

- revisit the mounted fuel tank and recheck for junk, clogged filter, and reclean the valve.

- get a new carburetor kit and reclean the carburetor.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,

Re: 1972 2hp Johnson starving for gas!

First try running it with the gas cap off.

While it is off, pull the hose off the carb and check fuel flow. If all checks I'd do the "sorta free" part and re clean the carb. If you didn;t pull all the plugs out of the carb the first time then do it the second and you may need a new kit depending on the plug factor.

I added to my reply above, I don't see why not, its the welch plugs and lead shots that are a one use item.

Success!!!

Took down the carburetor again and realized that I did not remove the plug near the low speed idle needle. Re-cleaned all the passages and holes and changed out the plug and blew everything out with carb cleaner.

Started it up and it was doing the same thing! Having to use the choke to maintain an idling motor, but not running as rough. I then adjusted the high speed needle by 1/2 turn counter clock wise, because that is where the fuel is coming from the tank.

Perfect running and great low idling. These are the final adjustments to low and fast needles.

Low speed needle -- 2 1/2 turn out counter clockwise

high speed needle -- 1 turn out counter clockwise ( will do the final adjust on the lake)

Thanks Betheking,
