HELP!
I have a 1972 Mercury 402 40 HP.
While out on the lake, it started running very badly. Had to throttle all the way up to get it started. Then if I couldn't keep it running on the first try, it would be flooded and I would have to wait 20-30 minutes. When running and trying to prime there was gas pouring out of the carb.
I got it home and pulled the carb off. The float had gas in it. I ordered a new float and new needle valve and seat kit. Once re-assembled, I tried to prime the carb with the bulb and gas still keeps pouring out of overflow hole in top of float bowl. I re-assembled it exactly the way it came apart and I also have a drawing for reference. I took the new float back out and dipped it in gas for a while to make sure it didn't have leaks. It was good. When you push the needle with your finger, you can pump the bulb as hard as you want and it holds pressure. This is telling me that the float isnt pushing up hard enough. I've even tried gently bending the arms to change where the float contacts them, with no success.
When running, it still spitts gas out of the overflow port, and you can hear the engine spitting and sputtering. Its drowning in fuel. I have a inline shut off valve between the tank and the motor. When I shut the valve, and it started running out of gas, it idled way up and started running the way its supposed to, til it ran out of gas.
PLEASE HELP! ANY IDEAS?
Here is a link to a schematic of my carburetor:
