Hi everyone i am new to this site and thak god I found it I had a problem that I fixed thanks to all the information on this forum. Ok my question is I have a 1973 Thundercraft Tri-Hull with a 72 .. 50 hp Evinrude Lark engine on it. I have never done anything execpt change the sparkplugs and lower gear oil at the end of the season. Should i be replacing water pump?,fuel pump?,or any other thing the engine is sound and except for bad gas a few years ago and a bad ground on my solenoisd this year has been virtually maintenance free. I run the motor about 30 hours a season. Any susgestions or should I just leave it alone?

Its not maintenance free, you have simply not done the maintenance yet.;)

1 Get the service manual.
www.outboardbooks.com
2 Water pump every 2 yrs.
3 Compression test to keep track of engine condition, write numbers in your manual.
4 Decarb every 6 months with seafoam, run decarb fluid in your fuel, just a bit will keep it at bay.
5 Change thermostats out.
6 remove prop, check for fishing line.
7 rebuild carbs with new kits , done by the book.
8 change fuel filter
9 install water seperator
10 new fuel lines and bulb.

yeh, maintenance free ...sure.:D

Be very careful when you do the water pump. You motor is hydro-electric shift and that means you have a wiring harness that runs down through the midsection. This part is NLA, so if you break the wires you'll have a problem.

Lower the gear box slowly and carefully, so that you can disconnect the blade connectors on the wiring.

Before you start doing your own maintenance, I highly recommend purchasing an OMC service manual for your specific motor. They can be obtained via a number of online sources, including iboats. You do not need a parts manual, because the 1972 motors are listed at www.shop.evinrude.com.
