Jay.....the gray wire is a tach lead. It provides the signal to a tachometer.

If you look on the starboard side of the engine, you should see two wires, a green and a blue wire which seem to disappear into the engine. These two wires provide the voltage to the shift solenoids. Here's what happens....

Blue and Green wire going to lower unit. Blue is reverse and green is forward.

No power to either = forward.

Power (12V's) to the green = neutral

Power (12v's) to both = reverse.

Mike is right, you need a manual. Also, remember to use gear lube made for electric shift lower units, like Premium Blend from Bomby.

Good Luck!

Jay, dont sweat it so much, that lower unit is designed to stay in forward if it messes up so you can still get home.

yes, to concur with ddaigle... if you have a voltage failure problem and you are forced to rope start your engine, your lower unit will automatically be in forward gear. with no voltage going to either shift solenoid, it automatically goes into forward. it requires 12volts to shift to either nuetral or reverse.

note: if you DO have to rope start it because of voltage failure, disconect the two wires going into the lower unit so the engine doesnt think its in nuetral or forqward and to bypass the nuetral safety switch
