Yes I have a 1972 johnson outboard. It has three cylinders. The only way to start it is to choke it first. Then start it and push to full throttle right away. When you do this it will take a second and then go. But it will only go at like quarter speed If you start and let it idle it will shut off after a minute. But like I said you have to choke it before you start it any time

bun****,
Are you priming the fuel line bulb before attempting to start? Is the bulb going flat while running?Make sure fuel tank vent is open or unobstructed.Choke is only needed on a cold motor(once on initial start-up).Post back....

Hello.
Sounds like you are not getting enough fuel.Begin with checking to see if your remote accelerator really does what it is supposed to do at the engine end of the cable. Then check your fuel tank air inlet to see if it is clogged. Then check your fuel line and ball for a small leak that makes it suck air instead of fuel. After those possibilities are eliminated check to see if your fuel pump works properly. If that is not it either, mix a carburator cleaning amount of seafoam in with your fuel and see if that clears it up.
If none of the above works, rebuild the carburators.
Good luck.

Re: 1972 60 hp johnson

Okay I changed the fuel line and the tank. So that cured my idle problem. Now she will start and idle. But she still only runs at medeum speed. I checked the spark by pulling one off at a time. The top plug seems not to change the idle of the motor. As much as pulling one of the other two. Also I put my hand over the carbs one by one. The top carb does not seem to change the idle once coverd. Like the other two do but when you move your hand from the top one. It seems to have a lot of gas flow out. That is when you move your hand away.

Check the spark on the top cylinder. Sounds like you're only hitting on 2 cylinders.

It may just be a "hung-up" carb float stuck closed.Remove the carb bowls(lower half) and check the needle's/floats for vertical travel.

Run the Motor, shut it down, pull the plugs and check their condition. If the top one is wet, you're getting gas. Having said that, have you replaced the plugs? How did you check for spark? It should jump at least 1/2" to the block. But do check the Carbs, also.

Another day :( :( Okay I cleaned the carb last night. Took the boat out today got about a quarter mile out. Then she slacked back down in speed. Got about another quater mile picked back up in speed. Then it just went back and fourth and every few minutes she'll pick up and then go back down.

Did you try pumping the primer bulb when it slowed down? If so, did it do any good? Sounds like the fuel pump to me, if the Carbs are set right. Also, did you change the plugs or inspect them after you shut it down? Did you double check the spark on #1? Run a compression check, too.
