UB, I think you are on the right track. As I have mentioned, I have the same motor and I have had pretty much all of the same problems that you are having.

In fact, I had even forgotten until just now that the rectifier in mine was replaced right after I bought it - at the time I was too busy to work on it myself, so I sent it to the shop and that is one of the things that they fixed. Since then, I have replaced all three coils, the powerpack, the timerbase and the ignition switch. My stator still ohms out at the desired value, but I am going to replace it at some point just to complete the rebuild of the ignition system.

My experience with this year/model is that they can be perfectly serviceable motors as long as they are sound mechanically. You just have to work through the electrical issues, as that area seems to be the weak point. I have gotten most of the kinks out of mine and I am able to run it frequently, and for long periods of time. As I have mentioned before, I could be happier with it.
