1972 65 HP Thermo Choke question

I have another question I should have added to my other one. THe motor I bought had been used in salt water and been sitting for 4 or 5 yrs. So I decided to take the head apart to replace the thermostat, head gasket etc. My question is the thermo choke switch was so brittle it just fell apart upon removal. I have seen other posts refering to this part and it's problems. Should I solder them together or tape them apart. I can't tell from the picture in the manual I have if it needs to be open or closed for normal non-choke operation. Thanks Buck

Re: 1972 65 HP Thermo Choke question

Just toss that thermal choke switch, and the wires going to it. (Disconnect the wires at the terminal strip). Then, after you do that, connect both the purple/yellow stripe and purple/white stripe wires coming from the choke solenoid to the terminal screw with the purple/white stripe wire coming from the big plug.

In other words, under one screw, you will have:
purple/white from the big plug
purple/white from the choke solenoid
purple/yellow from the choke solenoid

That will give you full control of the choke from the remote control. As per the service bulletin that tells you to do that.

Here's the OMC service bulletin on it:

Also, check you messages - I just sent a PM regarding the ignition system questions that you posed in another thread. I have scanned Section 4 - Ignition System, of the original OMC service manual, and am ready to send it to you.
