1972 65hp Evinrude choke

I've got a 1972 65hp Evinrude with the toggle choke on the electric shifter. When I hook the battery up the choke engages. I have checked all the switches and they check good. Can you give me some ideas? Thanks

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />I had a 1970 60 that had an automatic electric choke as well as the manual electric choke. If the motor was cold, it would pull the choke half-way automatically. I found that it was more of a problem and I disconnected the automatic part leaving the choke fully manual. On the terminal board, I moved the purple/yellow wire from the choke solenoid over to the purple/white terminal, or vice versa.

This one has the manual slide choke on the front of the motor I guess I could just use that, but what what does moving the wire do for me?

Moving the wire gives you complete control of the electric choke with the choke switch under the key. It won't let it choke halfway which was causing flooding problems on mine.<br /><br />The manual choke has three positions. If you move it all the way to Off, the electric choke won't choke. I took the button off and left the mechanism in the middle position. The combination of these two "modifications" made life so much easier!

So your saying the choke will work as normal without the half choke when cold. Will this eliminate having power to the choke all of the time until you hit the toggle switch?

I checked the choke switch again and the switch is bad, but when I unhook the switch and connect the battery the choke still engages what would cause that any ideas?

Are there 2 wires coming out of the choke solenoid, besides a ground wire? If I remember correctly, perhaps a purple/white and a purple/yellow.

Follow the 2 wires and hook the P/Y wire to the P/W terminal so when you hit the choke, both wires are energized together. Now you will get full choke. Originally the P/Y wire was always "hot" with the key on and then went to a temp switch that gave 1/2 choke when the motor was cold. It was supposed to turn off the 1/2 choke when the motor warmed up. The system didn't always work as planned so they came out with a service bulletin about hooking them up together somewhere around 1973 or '74.

Alright I moved the wires around like was suggested and as soon as I hook the battery up the choke engages. I put a new choke switch in and the key switch checks ok and is in the off position. I have checked all the wires for cuts or loose connections and they look ok. I'm lost any suggestions. Thanks

Those engines had an automatic choke of a different design. An electric soliniod controled by a thermal switch would pull the choke closed. The shaft on the choke valve being off centre allowed the valve to partially open when the engine fired. As the engine warmed up the thermal switch would open and the soliniod would release the choke valve. An switch on the control box allowed an additional coil in the soliniod to increase the pull on the choke valve if more choke was required.

If I remember the color codes back then, the purple/white wire should come from the choke switch. Make sure the switch is not shorted. Use a test lite or a voltmeter to test the circuit.<br /><br />Has the boat wiring or the motor harness been "jury rigged" or changed out recently?

The wire off the choke switch should be purple/white if I remember right. From there it should go to the terminal strip where you connected the 2 choke wires together. Make sure the motor harness side of the purple/yellow is not used anywhere. <br /><br />If the wires are "hot" where the choke wires connect, you will have to do some tracing and troubleshooting. Have the boat wires or the motor harness been jury rigged or "repaired" at any time?

The harness and wires are the original wires and I dont think the harness plug has ever been apart.Heres the tricky part even when the choke wires are disconnected from the switch and are attached to nothing the choke still engages and the key switch is in the off position.

Start testing at the choke switch, does it show 12V coming off the choke wire at that point when the switch is NOT activated?<br /><br />Sorry for the double post above. For some reason the first one did not show up, so later I wrote the second. This morning, both posts are showing.

I have 12v power at the switch as soon as I hook the battery up.

Just wanted to let you know it was the rectifier. Replaced it and now works like new. Thanks for all your time and help.
