I have a 72 80hp that was put on a 1989 boat. The idle lever doesn't move the throttle until it is past vertical. When I push the lever all the way back to low idle the distributer and linkage do not return to the idle screw. The cable is screwed all the way into the cable holder on the engine side. Is this normal or is there any adjustment on the lever end? should the distributer and linkage return to low idle by a spring? There are two places to add grease to the distributer, could it just need to be greased? What kind of grease do you use? I ordered a manual but would like to get this part fixed while I'm waiting for it.

have you disconnected the cable placed the engine in proper place and then adjusted the cable without moving the engine . you may have a worn out cable.

I disconnected the throttle cables and it still idles way too fast. I can push the distributer back against the idle stop and then it idles correctly, but as soon as I let go the distributer comes back away from the idle stop and my idle goes back up to about 1800 rpms. Is there an adjustment for this?

I should add that when I move it back to the stop I am only able to move the distributer cap and the piece it fastens to back to the stop. The horseshoe spring pulls it back away from the stop when I let go.

Turned out to be the linkage between the carbs, still not sure how it all connects but once the carbs were in sinc my idle dropped to well below 1000 rpms.
