I bought a tilt off a 100 hp- 1971 johnson for fifty bucks it fit right on. However it will not go up or down. The first thing I did was check the fluid. The motor spins and seems like its trying to work. This unit may of been sitting for many a years as far as I know. Any ideals?

Trim & Tilt

With someone?s help push the up button, and someone help the motor go all the way up. Lock motor in that position, now fill reservoir, replace cap. Unlock and bush button to lower motor. Keep repeating until it does not take fluid. The unit should operate now.

I did what you said several times but still not much of a difference but just a little bit. Is there only one place to fill up the fluid?. it seems full but still acts like it needs bled

Storage of the unit allows air to reach the top of the stored position. To get the air out, you will need to manually work the unit up and down until the air reaches the top of the new position, substituting fluid as approropriate.

When the unit is on the motor it is upright. When they are stored they are usually in a horizontal position. The air that is normally above the fill hole in the reservoir floats to the top of whatever position the whole unit is stored in. You have to get the air back to the reservoir and have the whole hydraulic system filled only with fluid or the tilt will not work correctly.

It is not really much different than what happens with air in a brake line, just a little more difficult to get rid of.

After bleeding it over and over as you guys told me, I got to tinkkering with the manual release screw and that fixed it. The thing does not tighten all the way down but has to be in a certain position.

Now the unit is working fine. This is a heavy motor and I am a old man with a bad back so thanks a lot guys.

Do you know that what you got for $50 regularly sells for $400+ on eBay? I've been trying to find one for years but the price always goes too high. Great find!

how i got it for 50 bucks was i seen it on craigs list. the guy had a 1971 - 100hp johnson with tilt that he wanted 300 for or he would sell parts off of. I called him up and offered him 50 bucks for the tilt and told him I would put the manual unit back on his so he could still sell the motor.

I'm jealous. Are you sure the one you saw on eBay was for a pre-'78 motor? It would be rare for one to go that "cheap".

I like what you did with your hood. How much that cost you?

Not too much. I removed the plastic Johnson trim piece which you should have to worry about and filled all the holes with Bondoglass. Sanded it a bit and sprayed it with Rustoleum primer and gloss. Got the decals from Nana's Decals on eBay. Very pleased with what I got from them. Maybe $50 total?
