Hello everyone,

I have a question on a 1972 pickup truck? My neighbor came over and ask me a question/opinion about his friends pickup truck spraying oil all over the place when cranking over or running. I told him to check the oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, freeze plugs, timing chain gasket. What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be great and I will pass them along to my neighbor.

there are only a couple of things that could "SPRAY" oil while cranking, oil sendor or manual gauge line broken, oil filter, or transmission lines if it's an automatic.....
really need more info.

Did he just put a rebuilt S.B. in or is it the motor that has been in it?

I agree. Look for a copper or plastic line right behind the distributor to have a crack in it. If it has an electrical gauge it will still probably be here, maybe the fitting has worked loose, or the sender is failing somehow.

Another possibility is broken rings causing enough blowby to force oil out of the dipstick tube. It is unlikely, but something to consider if the oil pressure sending unit is not the culprit. Also check to see if he has aftermarket guages. Old chevies and aftermarket oil guages seem to be a dime a dozen, and that little plastic tube invariably fails or gets melted.
