I just learned a costly lesson about impellers. On mine(70 55hp), the impeller has to be installed from the top of the drive shaft instead of from the bottom. Destroyed a brand new impeller,oh well.

I think I found the problem. First, I removed and cleaned the puddle valve screens, yes they were clogged. Then I removed the exhaust cover and inner plate looking for the water blockage. I found something much worse. I don't know the name of the part but it covers the water jacket that runs aside the pistons, it was shot. I have some pics if I can get them up, let me know what this part is called and if it is available. Thanks guys.

http://www.redsplash.com/ims/pic.php?u=3138f0Uv&i=1144

I sent these pictures of my motor to a Chrysler parts guy and he told me the part was available(no price quote yet)but to forget it, the motor was cooked. Not that I don't trust his opinion, but what do you guys think? The compression on both cylinders was good and I'm not going to run in any races. I just want to putt around my home lake for the rest of the season (which isn't long in cny), then I'll put her to rest or use her for parts. This motor is essentially a backup anyway, I'm using it on a 14 foot fiberglass boat. Thanks guys......

Bummer on the parts porto. I looked in my manual and I cant see that part anywhere. Did you remove it from the exhaust port? I have never been into that part of my motor and hopefully I will never have to go there. Is it possible this motor saw salt water and was not flushed after use. Parts for these motors are getting harder and harder to find. Did this guy mention what the part was called?

Yes, the part came from the water jacket that runs along the pistons under the exhaust cover. The guy who sold me the motor told me he owned it since 1973 and it was only used in the finger lakes of NY. He also told me it ran fine, so..... Anyway, the parts guy didn't say what it was called, he called it a cover. It seemed to be made of cast alum. and I guess it got to hot and melted or eroded over time. My impeller is pumping fine, but it can only pump water to this point before the water runs back down the inside of the motor leg. I'm going to order the parts and take my chances. It's to late in the season to look for another motor. Thanks for the help everyone, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hey porto I think you jinxed me. I have a chrysler 45 and went out fishing today. Was on the lake for about 5 minutes when motor shut down from overheating. I havent had a chance to take it apart yet but I changed my impeller and thermostat this spring. Motor has been running great all year. I did get it to restart after trolling for a couple of hours but your thread has me worried.

I hope it's something simple. I just got my Seloc repair manual for Chrysler, does your motor have a water pressure relief valve? The manual says this valve becoming clogged is a common problem on older motors and will cause an overhaet at high speed. Good luck.

I dont know if mine has a bypass. I pulled the lower unit and found the impeller snapped. Also the grommet going to the water tube is busted. Pretty simple fix. I hope you enjoy the Seloc. I hear it is a good manual. I have the clymor and the factory one but hardly use the factory one. If I ever get this stupid deck built maybe I could do more fishing. Hate them honey do lists

i dont know if you have solved the hp problem but i recently went thru the same cylinder symptoms. check thee head gasket. i had mine running fine on one cylinder, the other was sucking and pushing water. i might be a little late with this but it would be worth a look. i found a head gasket for 27 dollars. there were also a couple of small reed valves just adjacent to the fuel pump. these are down lower. mine were very plugged up. be careful with the gaskets. i have the same motor. after messing around a little i got 22 mph out of her. I got the parts and put the motor back together today and, IT RUNS!! I still need to work out some little things but the motor is pumping water and running on both cylinders. Thanks guys, I couldn't (and wouldn't) have done it without you all!

Now its time to leave the tool box at home and bring the tackle box. Mine is 5 years older than yours but I can always use a spare parts motor :) . Good luck with it and hope you have fun. Make sure you read the frequently asked questions forum on winterizing. Man I hate to say that word but you will have much better luck with it if you do a good job putting it away for the winter.
