Sorry for beating a dead horse here, but I can't solve this one, despite reading all the threads. 1972 Evinrude Starflite 100 HP 100293. When it runs, it runs great. Good power all over the range. Some days it won't pop. However, when I turn the ignition switch from off to on, it will fire. No fire when cranking. Semetimes I can get her primed up and if I hit the key just right it will fire and stay running. Checked the timer base (5 ohms), reverse cutoff spring is not grounded, battery voltage at 11 volts when cranking, and battery tested good. This has been ongoing since last season. I removed the rectifier and clipper, and installed a real regulator, so I'm getting 13.4 volts, not 16+ when it's running. The problems go back before the regulator installation though. Today it ran at 1000 rpm on the trailer for 30 or 40 seconds, then just quit and would not restart, but I still get it to pop when I cycle the ignition. Powerpack? Coil resistance measures the same as all my other motors, about .2 ohm on the primary. Have not checked secondary though. Distributor is clean, no carbon tracks. Joe Reeves, where are you? Can these packs go intermittently? I've even tried two batteries in parallel to make sure voltage stayed above 12 when cranking. No help. The starter spins over like a mad dog. I'm ready to fab a plate to go back to points and a coil, and would have done so already if the motor had points. It's kept my 85HP alive for years, and never had another ignition problem.

To eliminate the possibility of a bad key switch, check the voltage on the purple wire at the pulse pack input while cranking.

To answer your other question, yes they were almost notorious for intemittant no-fire. But that doesn't necessarily mean it is the problem.

I tried a second remote and also jumpering purple directly to battery, with no change in luck.

Anyone know the ohm readings on this coil, just in case?

Re: 1972 Evinrude 100 - intermittent spark

Had a 1968 100 and had the same problem. It turned out that clevite had sold Evinrude a bunch of power packs that had a problem. After replaciement it worked well for years and then recurred. It turns out that these power packs don't respond well to high resistance grounds. Evinrude built the leads on these engines with a connector under the dash, making it easy for the boat dealer to make the installation. In the wet environment, after some years the contacts have a nasty habit of corroding. Evinrude added a protection device in the system which may fail if the ground goes high, saving the powerpack. If you remake the connector a couple of times and it solves the problem you've put your finger on it. The best thing to do is to disconnect the battery and cut the color code wires and solder the leads. Good luck.
