OK got it running pretty good but it is hard to keep running cold, once it warms up a min it stays running at the start position or higher but when trying to slow the throttle down it dies out, what do you guys think i can do to get it running better or to idle at a slower speed, and keep running. also was thinking on replacing the fuel pump or would it do the same thing to just get the fuel pump kit? ty so much in advance.

Re: 1972 evinrude 125 hp idle problems

If the engine runs ok on top end, your fuel pump is probably ok. The carbs may be the problem. When at the true idle throttle position, the carb butterflys are completely closed- forcing the engine to run on fuel supplied from the special carb body idle passages. These are small passages and easily gum up with dried fuel over time, causing a fuel restriction and the engine to idle poorly or not at all. You may want to pull both carbs and blow out the idle circuits with an aerosol carb cleaner to make sure they are open. Compare the aerosol flow from each curcuit to the same circuit on the other carb to make sure they all flow properly.
