Just got this motor and a boat it was filled with trash and been neglected and sat awhile in the rain. We cleaned it up and put the motor on tried to start it and it started in like 6 or 7 pulls. We took it out and it ran a little sluggish for what i was expecting from a 18 horsepower. It started running poorly so we pulled the cover and the spark plug was cracked so we replaced them. It ran better after replacing the spark plugs but As a new boat owner i dont know too much about outboards so was wondering if you guys know anything about this motor its a fatswin 18 model 18203 from 1972? Should I clean the carb? Is pressure testing like the same process as a car? What else should I dont to with this motor that has sat in the rain? Do you have any links to info on this motor?

Welcome to the forum.

First step would to get yourselves a manual, either by buying on here or a used on ebay, or borrowing one at the library. Then clean carb throughly, by disassembling, moving all gaskets and plastic parts, soak it in carb cleaner solvent overnight, blow all orifices through with compressed air,
install a rebuild kit, which can be bought through this site, install carb again, and adjust sync'linck. Manual advises how to do so. Change waterpump impeller at top of lower unit. Check that both sparks will jum a 5/16# air gap from a nail put in spark plug boot, to a part of cranckcase, hold with insulated plier, while someone else pulls starter cord. When all above is in order, you have a fine, sturdy, and smooth working motor, knows as a very fine runner.

Hi,

While your at probably should drain and replace lower unit fluid, be sure to replace rubber o rings on the drain screws. Note, the fluid needs to be changed while the motor is in the vertical (operating) position.

Use Chaimpion plugs,

Fuel/oil mix is 50:1, 1 pint TCW 3 TO 6 gal. 87 octane gas.

Also since this motor is new to you this link should be of interest.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033;p=1#000000
