I have a 72 Evinrude 25 25202R on which the exhaust housing / mid section (see pic 1) is binding on the tilt lock spring when turning.

I imediately suspected the cause to be bad rubber mounts. However, the mounts that I removed (see pic 2) are not cracked or broken and look to be in as good or better condition than used mounts for sale on eBay.

Do these mounts look bad? They are original.

Is there anything else that could cause the exhaust housing to contact the tilt lock spring?

Huh. The mounts look ok to me too. The lower one looks a tad squished but still not bad.

I have a 77 Evinrude 25 25202R on which the exhaust housing / mid section (see pic 1) is binding on the tilt lock spring.

Very interesting. You are sure the mounts are original? Has anything else been changed, such as the steering bracket? Normal prop thrust should move the housing away from the spring, not toward it. Unless it is run in reverse an awful, awful lot. Sorry I don't have the answer. Let us know when you find it.

I'm fairly certain that these are original. They are painted the same colour as the motor. New mounts I have seen are only primed with zinc chromate.

The binding is when turning. I haven't had this motor out yet.

Here is a picture of the front upper mount (Pic 1) with measurements.

The rubber seems ok. When I squish it slightly in a visa small cracks appear. Do these mounts typically shrink with age?

Can anyone verify the size of a stock mount?

There is a bit of damage near the rubber mount mounting point (Pic 2). It looks to have been caused by a foreign object as there is no other damage. Possibly scraped by a wrench from the PO changing the mount... The damage almost seems "threaded"... Perhaps a bolt was lodged back there.

I came across this auction on eBay that lists the mount set (Pic 3) to fit my motor. It's starting to look like the PO replaced the front upper mount with the wrong one.

I too have the same motor and same problem, since it doesn't affect running it, I never bothered to check if it was the mounts or not. In my experience, busted mounts made idle and running sometime difficult, the shaking was quite noticable. On mine it just rubs when I turn.

Thanks for the reply. I am glad that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. I just picked up a new front upper mount on eBay. It looks like my mount has swollen with age when compared to the replacement.

I will post my results when this comes in.
