Hello everyone! I am new here and from what I have already seen, this is the place to be if you have a boat!
I have a question that someone might be able to help me out with. I just installed a new water pump on my outboard. I was told from a technician at my local marina that my 1972 Evinrude doesn't have a tattle tale spot or hole while the water muffs are on it to let me know if the water is circulating through the motor like it is suppose to. Any opinions? I need to know if it is properly working before I take it out on the lake and have to get the paddles out to get back to shore. I greatly appreciate any and all help I get on this issue and any firther issues that might arise with my boat and/or motor.
Thanks again and God Bless!

I doesn't have a telltale, I have a '73 65hp Erude. It will spit water out of two holes below the aft motor cover latch and the exhaust comes through the hub. Get yourself a manual if you're gonna work on it. Very reliable motors thought ;). Enjoy.

BigJ08,
Thanks for the reply! Since there is no tattle tale sign of it working properly, how long would it take for the overheating horn to go off? Any ideas, I hope none from past experiences though. There is a small hole fight above the muffs that is streaming water out pretty good when it is running. Good indication that it is working?
I hate to ask SO many questions, but I don't want to get out and blow my motor. I have no money to replace and very little to repair.
Thanks again

Water squirting out the drain holes only means one thing--the drain holes aren't plugged up.

A water mist blowing out the exhaust relief holes in the rear is the indicator that it is pumping.

Truthfully, the only assurance that your pump is working is to know darn well that it is in good condition. That's why some of us say to replace it regularly.

Even if you had a squirt type tell tale, you aren't going to spend the boating day with your head screwed around backwards to watch it. It only takes a few seconds to fry a motor if the pump suddenly quits, such as happens with a spun impeller hub.

The overheat horn is a joke too. False security. I have rebuilt dozens of powerheads that burned up before the horn ever went off...sometimes it never goes off at all. But I suppose it is better than nothing.

R F,
Where would I find these exhaust relief holes? I just want to be as certain as possible. Thanks for the reply and for all your help.

Keep in mind, when you are running an engine on a hose, you are force feeding it. You could take the impellor out, and it would cool just fine.

I have the same motor. As mentioned, you should get a service manual if you want to work on it. You can get a new reprint of the OEM service manual at outboardbooks.com, or you might be able to find a used copy for a few bucks less on ebay, like I did.

Until you get a chance to pick up a manual, I'll scan and send you the directions for anything that might need urgent attention from my manual if you need them.

Here's a post by iwombat on installing a tell-tale on your motor:

Thank all of you for all the help! I will plan on installing the tattle-tale this winter. I feel confident that the motor is in great shape and the water pump was installed properly. I did get a couple manuals from the public library and they helped out a lot, just wasn't sure about not seeing a strong stream being spit out.
Thanks again to everyone who helped me out with this issue. This is an awesome site for anything boat related!
