The problem is it will not stay in tilt. I do not see where it can engage to stay. I do see the switch for lock or tilt and when you take it out of lock it does unlock but when you swing the motor up, nothing engages to hold the weight in tilt. Can someone tell me what I'm missing?

You're not missing anything. The motor does not have a trim or tilt function, nor does it have a tilt lock. If I need to tilt it up and keep it that way, I slide a piece of wood in there.

my 68 3hp has an adjustment screw that is for the tilt friction ... maybe it has one of those.

Re: 1972 Evinrude 6hp Fisherman Tilt hold problem

This motor has been in the family since it was brand new. It seems to me at one time it would stay up by it's self until the lower unit took a whack on a rock and I came real close to losing the trim mechanism. I had a friend of a friend put trim part back in and now it won't stay up. So I thought I lost something or he didn't put all parts back in or something got cleanly sheared off. I'm thinking about either tightening the pivot bolt or take it out completely to see if I can get some friction when I put it back together to keep it up. I will block it up with wood if need be. I sure like this little baby. Motor compartment is close to mint condition. Lower unit has minimal wear. I prefer the old American made over the new any day and pretty proud of this baby. I had to pat her on the back when she took a whack. Thank you for the replies and I appreciate this sounding board.

Problem solved by just tightening the pivit bolt. I'm all smiles.
