1972 evinrude fastwin 18 problem

Hello everyone I am new to the site. I need some help with a boat motor I have aquired. I have taken the carb off 3 times and soaked it and replaced the little floating needle under the bottom of the motor. I can crank the motor first pull and it runs a little rough but it'll run. when I finally cut it off the motor will not crank again. If I let the motor sit over night alot of times it wil crank up first pull again.Is there just still something in the carbs? I have talked to a local mech several times and one of them there said there is a hole in the fuel punp diaphram. and the other said its the carb. I have saoked and sprayed like 4 cans through evey hole on that thing and it seems to be clean. I would take it in but I'm afraid one trip to the shop will be more than the whole motor is worth. Any help I do appreciate. Thanks

Do it again, when oit won't start test it for ignition spark so you can eliminate that.

Then try spraying a bit of fuel into the carb throat, if it runs on that prime its the carb or pump.

Test the pump by removing the feed line at the carb and pull it through to see if it pumps a bit of fuel each time, or if its a pressure tank you kmow immediately as fuel will spurt out of the fuel feed.

If fuel is present at the carb feed and its pumping then you need a carb rebulild kit and take it all apart. Could be sticky float or something.
Do you know how to set the float?

There are directions in the sticky files or faq's.

PC, your tale is classic. Most carburetor trouble--isn't. It is obvious that your are not attacking the right part.

First things first, make sure you have a motor that can be fixed. By that, I mean check the compression.

Once you find that is ok, remove the flywheel and check the ignition system. It is almost a sure bet that is where the trouble lies.

people immediately blame the carburetor, but properly maintained they are more durable than any electrical component.

I used to own a 1963 fastwin with the same simptoms. Ran sluggish to the fishing hole, then wouldn't start on the way back to the ramp. It was only running on one cylinder

I believe the compression is good I will check it again. I also have removed one sparkplug wire and the motor turned over, then the other and the motor turned over.I'll try it again today and see if it starts.I have put in new plugs,a new impeller and some of the carb parts but not all. the needle with the rubber *** on the end is the one I replace.I am not sure if I seated the float correctly but I did pit it back like I took it out.I've cleaned out the tank gotten a new line and bulb. I may get a total rebuild kit and see where I go from there. Thanks more updates as we progress...I'll take photos of the transformation to my flats boat

By "turned over" do you mean that it started?

Check the compression with a compression tester. Readins should be with in 10% of each other.

Check the spark with a spark tester-should jump a 1/4 " (?) gap witha blue-white snap.

OK I pulled the spark plugs and got good fire then I shot some carb cleaner int the carb and it fired up smooth. It has to be a carb problem cause I am having a hard time getting it to fire up with just gas..when I pump the bubble its tight but when I unscrew the screw in the bottom of the bowl on the carb no gas is coming out. I'm get the whole rebuild kit and start from there.I hope it works

Fuel should come out that bottom screw, so yes, redo the carb and let us know.

Yes ite should. Maybe needle/seat problem there. Now, don't try to start it with carb cleaner. The man above said squirt some fuel in and that is what he meant.
