I’m now the proud owner a Qty (2) 50 hp evinrude/Johnson 1972 50esl72c. The evinrude melted the stator this summer. This weekend I found and drug the Johnson out of the woods. Was the Johnson the higher end version? Looks like it.
So, the Johnson:

After a little tlc, I have excellent spark + compression .

the evinrude: It was bogging down on the water. In neutral she would roar... in gear a wounded lamb. The carbs had been soaked twice. Kinda following That YouTube guy in Florida approach. Soak, then spray until cleaner fluid drains out of those three little holes. The carbs components when I first cracked them open after buying it looked brand new. Still talking about the evinrude (which was running in September but purchased in March). All I read led me to believe the carbs were still the culprit. I read seafoam in the gas mix would break the ethanol residue loose. So I ran her for 30 minutes with seafoam in the gas mix. She blew a lot of smoke. It would start to drag throughout and I would throttle up and then back down once it seemed to catch its breath. It did get to a glorious idle so I shut it down. The next day we headed out to the lake.

this is long sorry... so at the lake she fires right up. Gets right into that sweet idle. Put into gear, runs perfect, then bogs down and won’t start again.
Back at the house, I notice what looks like greenish oil dripping below flywheel. The stator has melted a bit. Seemed to ohm out fine but internet said that could be the gremlin.

fast forward to the Johnson. Johnson has great spark. Took my much labored over carbs from the evinrude and put on Johnson.

she does not even puff.

so: you smart people

1. You think ethanol residue could still be clogging up those carb ports?
2. My gas mix maybe to blame? It has been sitting a bit and has seafoam in it.
3. I have inspected the hoses but not changed them. Could these be likely issue.

I mean, what’s left...compression, spark, fuel. I’m at fuel.

anyway, I’m leaning towards full proof non ethanol gas first, then replacing hoses, then the carbs again.

please advise

Only difference between Evinrude and Johnson is the paint and decals.

If the evinrude is idling fine but bogging down in gear id check if this model carb has a high speed fuel jet, then adjust that accordingly.
