there is a pitot device on the transom (ie. a hole where the water can push into as the boat is moving) then there is a tube that runs to the gauge, and the gauge reads the pressure. Check components by blowing thorugh them, they should be clear of obstructions. You can also blow into gauge to see if you get a reading. Also, it is possible you have a wheel type speedometer. Check whats on your transom, and if theres hose going to it.

No matter what you do to it, it's never going to "work". :p

That's the way all boat speedometers are, they are just really really really inaccurate, and become clogged easily so they are even more inaccurate. That's why you hear people specifying that their speed was measured on a GPS all the time.

davette, to give you an example of what zmoz is saying, I have a 19' sterndrive boat. At anything over 2/3 throttle, the speedo reads 42mph, even at wide open throttle. The true WOT speed per gps is 47. The pitot tube speedos rely on the water rushing by to apply pressure/vacuum to give a reading.

btw: congrats on the 'tron. Bith of my boats are '76 Glastrons.

I know what you mean, I looked at it, and found that the pitot piece that hangs down off the transom was broke off. so I blew into the tube and it does work, but just as you said not a very accurate design, thanks..

My Gaffrig speedo is right on the gps -- even over 100 mph.
