Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

Today my daughter and i took a little road trip and picked up a possible donor. We got a 78 starcraft glass trihull with a 79 150hp evinrude with power tilt and trim. The trailer had brand new wheels and tires as well and came with 2 excellent spares. All this for a measly 300 smackers. Finally a change of luck.

Luck = good. Donor = Good. Road Trip with daughter = very good. Trailer = good. New wheels and tire = good. Spares = good.

Sorry about the cracks in the gel, but I don't think those bridges over the strakes or the black filler is factory. Probably needed to come out. Decker (Kent) is doing some spot gel repairs on his deck boat, so you may want to follow his thread and that will give you a guide to fixing that when the time comes.

P.S. I happen to have personal knowledge that starcraft glassers love the landfill. They feel right at home there.

Ugh!, on the extra work, but aw well...

And Super good news on the donor...nice score for 300 pesos! Gonna get a lot of good bits and pieces for that small investment...

Congrats!

Hope the job-o-lio situation starts to look up...

Best regards, good thoughts and have a great weekend picking through the new donor-boat goodies...

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

The "donor" was actually just something I found on craigslist that I plan on parting out and trying to make some money off of. I would love to pt that 150 on the Glastron but it's only rated for 120hp and I don't really like the idea of overpowering.

Tomorrow my wife, sister and I and a couple of our friends will be doing a 5k run. I'll admit I have done absolutly no training for this. It will be interesting and fun and I hope I come across the finish line still breathing

5k run...that will give you plenty of thinking time...can work out a lot of your boat's details in your head while you are running

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

We finished our 5k run without any issues. There were 13000 runners in 15 waves. I ran about 2/3rds of it and walked the rest. It was over 90 degrees with only one water station at the halfway point and another at the finish that was out by the time we got there. It was fun and a good experience. Maybe next time I will train first

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

I did a compression test on the 150 'rude I picked up. All the cylinders were around 110 except for one that was around 40....I should of known it was to good to be true. Looks like I will be putting atleast one new piston in. This motor has the rings that sit very high on the piston and are know for breaking. I have never torn into a powerhead so it will be a new learning experience for me.

Here is a shot of the damage

The cylinder will either need re-sleeved or bored out

Just catching up, sorry to hear about the compression & piston.

Best wishes for an upswing on the employment situation & making some boat funding w/ the donor parts & pcs!

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

There probably wont be any progress on the boat this week. I have been helping a friend try to get his boat going. He has a 350 i/o that has a cracked block and both heads are cracked. The motor looked brand new inside and was recently rebuilt. We are going to pick up a block this evening and swap the internals over and I already had a set of heads on hand. They are going on a trip this coming weekend and want to take their boat so I will be trying my best to get it ready for them.

I agree, that even counts as boat progress in my book...actually worth extra credit points since you are giving of your boat time to increase another boaters enjoyment...:D

Wow, & I thought the Starmada mob could turn on you quick.....

Hey, I like working on someone else's boat. Learn what not to do over in their driveway:eek: Hope they have a great trip & enjoy the boat. Then lend a hand w/ all that excess resin puddle grinding. Get a PorterCable grinder. Black & gray goes w/ everything. His Admiral will love it:facepalm: Goggles & respirators are gray too. She can bedazzle her tyvek suit anyway she sees fit, AFTER the grinding is done, not before.....

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

I just finished putting the motor together for my friends boat. I just need to go drop it in now. I would have had it done yesterday but something came up that took up most of my afternoon. A few more hours and it should be ready to fire off. I hope it runs good and stays together since it has been almost 8 years since I put one together

Re: 1972 Glastron GT-160

You guys crack me up :D

I got the motor installed and everything hooked up. It ran really good and had 75 lbs of oil pressure when first started. The manifolds were getting hot due to not enough water circulation but I think that is due to the fact we have poor water pressure at our house. He is going to drop it in the lake Friday and test it out. Hopefully he will take my advice and take it easy on the motor for the first few hours.
