i have a 72 glastron swinger with volvo penta AQ130C engine and volvo penta 270 outdrive, The engine is garabge due to no power(couldnt even tube behind it) and alot of internal smoke and it took on water. Did the head gasket water pump seals and everything still nothing, Rings are shot and i think the block is either warped or cracked. I want to know what other engines can i put in the boat with that lower unit? i dont think $1500 for a used 30+ year old engine is a fair price at all. and i know after magnaflux and new internals ill be into the old engine alot more than i want. Can i get a B series volvo car engine block and swap the cam and valve train? Or any other brand or type of engine that will bolt up? any help will be appreciated. Just want to get this running good enough to0 ski behind

Ayuh,... I believe the Volvo B-motor is the same long block, bolt fer bolt...

No cam or head change necessary...

I'll agree the long block is PROBABLY the same, not sure about the cam, but the head is the same.
Even the engine circulation pump changes. Not sure if there are different bolt holes or cast bosses for the marine accessories. Might want to look over the automotive block real close.

This might be a case where the "Graybeards" have forgotten more than the rest of us will ever learn. That engine has been out of production for over 30 years so they may have had to learn newer and more advanced engines and just forgotten the details of this relic.

There are some differences from the base B20 engine. The marine variant has a different cam, I believe it's the "k" grind. Because of the cam, it also has double valve springs. The automotive head would need to be machined to accept the double springs. Because of the heavier springs, it also has a metal cam/crank gearset. Not sure if the automotive valves are the same but the marine exhaust valves have stellite for hardening. And of course, the 2 carb marine engine has an oil cooler.

IPD at ipdusa.com can get many of the internal engine parts if rebuilding is what you want to do. I've been told that you can go out to .30 over on the pistons but it's not worthwhile after that. A reasonable replacement might be an overhead cam B23/B230 such as an AQ125 or 131. The only change to bolt it up to the transom plate is the exhaust pipe.

Before you spend too much on repairing the engine, you might want to weigh the boat to see if you're carrying around a lot of waterlogged foam.

To give you an idea of expected performance, my boat has all new deck, transom, and stringers, and a healthy AQ130D. It weighs in at 1780 empty and maxes out around 30 mph with full fuel, a couple of fat guys, and a 4 bladed prop at 5000 rpm.

Edit - that's a "P" grind on the marine cam. Here's a link: http://www.turbobricks.com/resources.php?content=camspec
