Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and relatively new to the boating world. This past summer I came into a 1964 (i think)14ft Alumacraft boat with a 1972 Johnson 25hp outboard. The boat is really great for the year, it has a bow w/lights and windshield, wooden transom and all that good stuff. I'm eventually planning on putting in a wood floor with carpeting and all that. But my problem is the motor. First off, I bought a manual off ebay and found that the low speed idle was off and adjusted correctly. Thats when i finally got it started. However, in the few times i've had it out on the water the motor will run awesome for like 5mins, full power and response, the boat will plane out and its great. Then the motor slowly starts to bogg down to about 1/3 of the total power i had mins before. So i would kill the motor and get a tow back to shore for inspection. My father took the boat out one day and he says that it was running waaay to hot. So i talked to a local marina guy who told me to try running it with out the thermostat to see if that made a difference. Which it did not, (by the way the motor does pump water at a steady rate) So over the winter i've been buying up new parts from ebay that i'm going to slap on in the spring including a new impeller kit, thermostat and points. Does anyone have any ideas on what my problem could be? Someone suggested spark to me, but I have bright blue hot spark on both cylinders. (Maybe wrong plugs?) I have not checked the compression because it will run fine for the initial 5-10 mins. (Eventually i will check compression just for peace of mind) Any ideas???

Thanks,

Tim

Welcome to iboats Tim,

Once the motor gets up to temperature you could be dropping spark on a cylinder. You could try testing spark when the motor acts up by pulling the plug wires one at a time, if one wire makes no change and the other does the one without change will be the cylinder with poor or no spark.

I would suspect a damaged coil coud be the culprit. When you get around to changing the points, impeller, t'stat, etc. inspect the coils for any signs of cracking or other damage(not uncommon on those coils), even small cracks can cause problems.

Compression test would be the first thing to check, also if you haven't got one already get an OEM service manual for that motor.

Good Luck and post back any results :)

I bet your father was right. Leaving out the thermostat with a weak waterpump isn't going to make the motor run cooler. And a weak waterpump can many times still pump a good tell/tale stream.
