OK, continuing my rebuild of the StarCraft Seafarer....it came with a pretty clean 72 Johnson 2-cycle 25HP outboard. I'm doing a preventative rebuild due to it not being run in about 5 years. I've done the lower, water pump impeller and seals. I'm moving up to do ignition and carb rebuilds....I have a service manual but my question is.....when I install new points, is there a tried and true method to get the gap correct without having any of the diagnostic tools referenced in the service manual. Remembering my old lawnmower days, I seem to recall that for each set, I used to move the shaft around until the points just closed on it, and then remove the old ones and put new ones on in the closed position. Then run the shaft around until max gap and check with a feeler gauge. Sound about right?

Don't make it so complicated.

1. Remove old points
2. Install new points
3. Rotate shaft till points are open as wide as they will. Adjust gap to .020"
This gets them "close enough". If you want superior accuracy, use the tool suggested in the manual.
Note: Even new points have to be cleaned
