I've been searching and reading a lot about the types of oil that can and should be used in my 1972 Hydraulic Shift Johnson and came across a post that said you could use ATF. The post explained that ATF could be used but that some types of ATF could be bad for the gearbox seals, but didn't explain what types and why? So in a nutshell, can I use this...

... and, if not, could you give me a brief gearbox oil "101"

Many many thanks

We used to use ATF to flush the lower unit, but never run it with ATF in it. You need to run the proper oil for an electric shift lower unit. Type C oil.
