ok...newbie... but learning everyday...sometimes the hard way... i moved my 50 hp from one boat to another.the new boat has new steering cables etc...thought it would be a simple connection... but NOT... on the old boat with this motor, the cable and the rod at the end (don't know the name of it), had a hole at the end of the rod and then a threaded piece that simply screwed into the steering bracket with a sort of ball and socket connection... on the old boat, on the new boat, the rod doesn't have a threading at the end... just the hole. my 1972 motor doesnt' have the hole to go threw in the stern braket and then to a "j" bar and then to the steering bracket.... so now that i have totally confused you alll... how do i connect this? buddy says i need a transom bracket to connect to the cable... i get that, but how would i connect the end to the steering bracket...? i am feeling a trip to the marine repair shop in my future...

Re: 1972 johnson 50hp STEERING connection help

Depending on the length of the cable, there are 2 basic ways to do it. One is with a support tube that mounts below the motor similar to the tube built into newer motors. Then a drag link connects back to the tiller arm
The second is where you use a support tube mount to the side of the motor and connect the end of the cable to the tiller arm. Is this what you are trying to describe? True, the cable ends are no longer threaded for a ball joint, however they do have a two-way swivel affair that utilizes the hole in the cable end. Yes a trip to the store and a look in the Teleflex catalog will help. Or maybe the Teleflex website if you can make sense out of it.
