Greetings,
After much consideration, reading these forums, and talking to the boss (A.K.A. the wife), i've decided to turn a boat anchor into a running motor. i have a 72 johnson 65ESL72S that looks like it's going to need a powerhead rebuild and has the typical shifting problems in the lower unit. I hope this simple newbie to boat motors can call on the masters of this forum for help and advise as i go along.

Lower end.
Ok, i changed the oil in the lower end using type C oil. Oil that came out of it was black, but no signs of water or metal in the drip pan. Unit is stuck in forward, even after running the motor for 5-10 minutes to see if it would pop into neutral while warming the engine to do an compression test. Following the guidelines layed out in this forum, i've applied 12v directly to the solinoids. no change, but the question i have is, does the motor need to be running while doing this or can you just be turnng it over? I've done the dc amp test, ohmmeter test, the shift toggle switch and the neutral switch test all pass. only other wierd thing i find is without running a jumper from the battery to the knife for the 12v, i only read 10.2 vdc. Any help or advice would definatly be welcome.

Powerhead.
The for mentioned compression test didn't come out too well. The motor will run, compression though is 30, 90,90 from top to bottom. I know this motor sat for quite awhile, and now it seems like its toast. I do have an OEM service manual, and i'm ready to jump in with both feet. Any advice or thoughts on this before i start? Like i said, this will take some time, no rush, Minnesota winters are just too damm cold at times to work in the garage, but i will keep at it.

Looking forward to hearing from you all

Lower unit:
If the electric side of the lower unit checks out, fill it with ATF and run it on a hose to flush the lower unit. Sometimes the pump can get sticky and not operate properly. Might help, might not.
Powerhead:
Before you jump in to deep, pull the cylinder head and check out the condition of the cylinder walls and pistons to see if there is any damage.

As far as the p/h, pull the cyl head and see what you find. It just may be a blown head gasket. How many ohms did you read when you checked the blue and green wires going into the l/u ??

Thats a good idea on the powerhead guys. I'll pull the head and snap some pics to show you what i'm looking at inside. As for the ohms on the solinoids, i got 6.0 and 6.2 respectfully. I'll try the ATF and see if that makes a difference.

Ok, i removed the head cover and head and here are some pics to look at

The springs and the thermostat will definatly have to be replaced, and the head gasket is definatly shot. The cylinders look ok, no major scratches, some scorching, but i'll defer to you folks as you i'm sure you've seen tis before. I have more pics if needed. let me know your impressions and advice.

many thanks,
Vahran

I would clean everything up, replace the springs and make sure the head is flat, install a new gasket and put it back togeather. Make sure to torque the head to the proper spec and in the proper rotation.

sounds like a good idea. Is there an easy way to check and see if the head is flat, or is that something that a shop would have to do?

You can use a straight edge to check it.
