hello i have a 72 merc 50hp that i replaced the water pump in when i reinstalled the LU and tried to start eng. the prop was spinning and it seems to be in gear so i dropped LU shifted the box to full foward and spun the shift shaft all the way forward still didnt work ... the prop rachets to the right (clockwise) and i thought it was locked in the other direction but since i put the water impeller on its just tight so the prop spins in the other direction its just very hard the point im trying to make is my prop does not free spin at all
while i spin my prop im turning the shift shaft but it never frees up or spin free in both directions

PLEASE HELP sorry for the long post

No one here get paid for sarcasm from one that apparently don't have a service manual or know how to read it. That said, drop the unit and shift it into rev, then shift the upper into rev and replace the unit, if the both stay in rev the engine will shift and if it jumps gear on you it will be quickly apparent.
