Howdy.. my 72 Rude 125.. Before i had problims with the motor going in to neutral.. well with your guys help i got that fixed but now i can't get a starter to crank the motor over. i've been to my local dealer and i feel bad when i got back with another remaned starter that doesn't work. i've gone through 5 starters that won't work. do you know of anything that could be making the motor hard to turn over?

Is the solenoid OK? If you wire direct to the starter, does it spin normally?

Did something get bound up in the lower unit?

Go to Engine FAQ, E120B.

Do the troubleshooting in "Outboard wont start".

You probably didn't need to buy a starter.

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

Re: 1972 Rude 125..

Howdy.. I took my 200 amp booster battery charger and hooked it up directly to the starter and it still wouldn't crank it over.. i cleaned all the connections and still no crank. it has between 123 and 125 psi in each cylinder. the starter doesn't even want to crank it over with only one plug in it. im begging to think this motor is goin to be a basket case. my local dealer has a 1992 rude 90hp that was traded in 2 years ago and has sat in storage.. today i was playing with it to see what is wrong with it. whats the better motor? 1972 rude 125 w/ele shift or a early 90's rude 90hp??

Take all the plugs out and see if you can turn the motor over by hand. Get back to us & we can go from there.

The better motor between the two is the one that works. My guess is that the fix to the one you have will be pretty simple so don't give up just yet.

i can turn the motor over by hand... i did that earlier when i found out the starter wasn't goin to work.. it seems kind of funny because the lowerunit was screwed up and i fixed that and just after it was fixed the starter broke and and now it doesn't like to turn over
