Ok so tomorrow I'm going to look at a 1972 19ft sea ray with a 1972 mercury 115hp. My question is I have only ever owned a Johnson, what are some common problems I should check for with this boat and motor?

Pictures, but considering it is a mercury doubtful you will encounter much problems. Parts should be readily available! As for everything else check the boat for deck damage due to water secretly getting into hull and damaging the structural part of your floor. Also known as a deck, stringers, etc. Check your transom which is the area in the back of boat that your engine is mounted to. Ensure that is solid and not rot. I'm no professional here but I do know a great deal in finding a solid boat as for hull damage and structural damage is concerned. Thanks to eveyone on Iboats!!

For engine, ask to hear it run, check fluids, ask questions like what type of maint. has been performed and when. If you have tools available check compression. If not ask for a sea trial and even offer gas $ if your really interested. Always best to sea trial if you do that it will tell you a lot about the mechanical portion of the boat and hull rigidness as well as water damage.

I'm not one to be worried about interior because that is going to get changed eventually to your likes. If it is cracked, etc, sun damage, or just needs all redone then so be it. Not to mention boats get dirty and wet so expect them not to be perfect especially of that age of boat. Although my 1972 SeaRay is in solid interior condition but it goes without saying it was covered and in California climate.

Another thing but not a major concern is inquire on any paperwork of work performed Also, if the owner has original manuals for engine and boat. About all I can think of if I left something out important then I'm sure the pro's will chime in soon.

The parts for some Mercs are hard to come by. Post over in the Mercury outboard section.

See I knew some pro's would chime in soon enough. I know how to fix most mechanical issues or find it rather easier to learn but when it comes to actually knowing what I need or what is available and always finding the parts then yea I don't know :)

If that motor has been used in the salt water, you may have issues due to it's age. The ign is the older style and expensive to replace. BTW - that boat/motor combo should be real cheap, in the $1K range, or less.
