1972 eska 7 hp outboard with forward neutral shift is always in forward gear. When I shift to neutral I hear gear noise like it is trying to come out of gear, but prop still spinning. In forward it is fine.
Any help with trying to fix the shift on this? Thanks

Welcome to Iboats,
The way the clutch works is the shift lever when in neutral holds the collar of the clutch stationary allowing the internals of the clutch to spin freely when you shift to forward the collar is released allowing the clutch to lock and drive the shaft, I would guess your clutch spring is broken and that is the noise you hear in neutral, I saw one on ebay but its "buyer beware" you could be buying $50 worth of junk, most guys just weld the collar to the rest of the clutch and use it as direct drive.

Did you post at the yahoo group?

Yes, I posted on the yahoo site, but had no replies. Thank you for the response. Is there a schematic of the clutch available somewhere or disassembly instructions? Thanks again.

Sorry about that, had to get out on the water and play this weekend.

Nope no schematics...basically unfixable...ebay is your only hope for a replacement. I think the trick to keeping the clutch alive is to periodically break the outboard down and oil up the clutch with 2 cycle oil to prevent the spring from rusting out.

Ok, I'll take it apart and at least have a look. Thanks for the help. Grew up in Ohio myself.
